For the King´s Return Palpur Kuno in Crowning Glory
by   Raja Chatterjee
With a cacophony of chirping birds from all around, Palpur Kuno comes alive in morning glory. Call of the wild seemed irresistible. With an early breakfast we rushed out to explore the enchanting wilderness beyond. A little distance away from our bungalow compound, we met a squirrel busy transporting material for his home making, amid the strewn ruins of a village, that has been shifted years ago to pave ways for lions rehabilitation. For the king's grand return, even the squirrel is at work! Thoughts swapped at the flapping wings of a peacock, flew overhead. Turning heads we were gleefully greeted by the lone Chinkara (Indian Gazelle), stood on our way and jumped out in seconds towards the silvery meadows.

Cascading appearances of Sambhar, Chowsinga, Black buck, Spotted deer, Barking deer, Wild boar, Langur and Rhesus monkey transformed the outings as memorable ones. We paused at every excuse to behold the awesome beauty of these canyons while negotiating the high ridges en-route. We unravelled this nature's marvel by walking long lengths. This effort enabled us to spot some of the rare and most interesting species of birds
Turning heads we were gleefully greeted by the lone Chinkara (Indian Gazelle), stood on our way and jumped out in seconds towards the silvery meadows.

As we drove on, the wildlife carnival at Palpur Kuno went on to unfurl its prized denizens. Holy herds of Blue bulls appeared, pair of jackals peeped in and pushed off in hurry. Vast tracts of grasslands, scrub forest with scattered trees, deep ravines and craggy gorges set stage for the games here in galore.

Fresh footprints of herbivores and of occasional carnivores decorate paths and water holes of the forest. Among the big cats, few tigers and some leopards rule the roost at the apex of food chain. Abundance of Sloth Bear, Wild dog, Hyena, Indian fox, Wild boar make it a special place.

On safaris through out the day, we ventured into the high concentration wildlife areas like Lanka kho, Kher Kho Aam Kho and Khalai. These areas are essentially steep rugged canyons, locally called Khos, have been carved by streams over the eon. The dense maze of vegetation and steepness make the Khos look inaccessible and impenetrable at places. Perennial streams serpent through most of them, making the habitat rich in faunal diversity.
